Our goal for the SmartCane is to provide an alternative method of guidance for the visually impaired. Currently, millions of Americans are visually impaired and thousands rely on the traditional white cane for mobility and independence. We want to offer a sleek and modern alternative to the white cane that is just as intuitive. Using ultrasonic technology, the SmartCane will guide users without having them worry about folding and unfolding their traditional cane. With this SmartCane, we will be able to have individuals gain more independence by allowing them to have a further range of their surroundings. Individuals will also be able to use this device to have them direct them to locations and places. Along with these attributes, in future iterations, the SmartCane will also be able to provide additional safety features such as Global Positioning System to help relatives or significant others know where the user is located in real time. This can also double as a location system in case the individual ever loses their smart cane. Other important safety features that are to be implemented are a nighttime walking light and a highly reflective finish to create as much visibility as possible for the user during night time use. Some other benefits of this SmartCane is that it is small and lightweight. It has a rechargable battery that offers greater convenience. Along with all of these features, the SmartCane is made to be durable and longlasting.
